Hi there! I’m Imani Sankofa the Self Love Guide. Thank you for being a part of my community!
Since starting my quest for self-discovery many years ago, I awakened my passion for life, the beauty in the present moment, nature, creative writing, traveling, the desire to try new things, and the love for people.
During this adventure of self-acceptance, I was able to achieve various breakthroughs in my life becoming a better person for myself, my family and my community. As part of my self-love journey, I have been able to reconnect with my true self and embrace the knowledge hidden inside of me. I have since committed myself to help other women experience the freedom of loving from the inside out so they can live life to the fullest.
If you take a look at my bio here on iHeartMe, Twitter and across all social media, you’ll see that my name is Imani Sankofa. That’s been my name for more than seven years. Prior to that it was Bernadette. Bernadette, in fact, since the day I was born.
Changing your name so dramatically isn’t something many of us do, so I thought it would be fun to tell the story of why I changed it, what the process was like and what I learned from it.
Changing my name was a mindful and holistic process taking mind, body, and spirit into consideration. Bernadette, strong and brave as a bear; saint of healing is an accurate depiction of my personality but an incomplete one. I wanted a name that reflected the woman I was becoming – mind, body & spirit.
During the summer of 2003, my daughter became gravely ill with a terminal prognosis. My family was in medical crisis. It was during this time that I became in touch my true self facing my greatest fears and weaknesses.
I had to grow my faith, examine my life blueprint, and draw upon the strength of those around me. I relied heavily on the spiritual realm. A metamorphosis occurred, and I transformed, emerging into a new woman. The new me required a new name.
I wanted to choose my own name – one that would help shape my future each time it was called. I thought long and hard examining my cultural, spiritual, & gender blueprints. So I chose the name Imani Sankofa. The meaning of Imani is “faith”. Sankofa is a word in the Twi language of Ghana that translates as “Go back and get it” (san – to return; ko – to go; fa – to fetch, to seek and take) and also refers to the Asante Adinkra symbol represented either by a bird with its head turned backwards taking an egg off its back, or as a stylized heart shape. The underlying meaning is that you can learn from past mistakes and correct them in the present to enable smooth transition into the future.
So there you have it. My self-love journey gave birth to my transformation, and Imani Sankofa was born. [Tweet “My #SelfLove journey gave birth to my transformation.♥”]
