How To Create The Life You Really Want

Wouldn’t it be great if you could live life exactly as you want? Well, you can. You are in charge of your own destiny. And you don’t have to choose between your family, work, desires, or friends.

You can have the life you want by following these simple steps:

1. Decide to Live

Everyday so many of us live life in a mind numbing way. We get stuck in the “rat race” of life perhaps working a job instead of having a career. We give more of ourselves to everyone else with nothing left for us at the end of the day.

Creating the life you want first starts by making a decision to change. Make a decision to enjoy your everyday life. Visualize yourself living the way you want to live; doing the things you want to do; and being the person you want to be.

I start each day by setting my intentions of the type of day I expect to have. Before going to an event, meeting or any experience that’s important to me, I always declare my expectations of the outcome. Do I always get what I want? Most of the time I do because I went into the experience with the right mindset. Although things may not be perfect, my mind is able to the see the good in the experience.

For example, a colleague was complaining about all the Spring rain we were getting. My response was, “Well at least its not flooding.” Our neighbors in Louisiana were experiencing heavier downpours, severe flooding, extensive property damage and unfortunate fatalities.

2. Create a Plan

Life doesn’t happen by accident. Life must be planned. Of course you can’t plan every moment of the day, but you can plan those moments that matter. Figure out what’s really important to you and then plan on making those activities a reality in your life.

Living the life you want doesn’t have to be a grand gesture. It can be something simple as going to the beach. Don’t have a beach? Go the park, the lake or even closer, spend time in your own backyard.


Make a list of 10 ten things you enjoy or have always wanted to do. Then from the list, pick 1 activity that you can do right now.

For example, I was telling my husband how much I enjoyed kite flying years ago. The wind is high during this season where we live. It seemed everywhere we went, people were flying kites. To my surprise, my husband went to Dollar Tree and purchased two kites for a dollar each. We’re going kite flying this weekend.

So you see, your plan can be as small as spending time for free in your own backyard, going the park, lake or beach or spending $2 and going kite flying. For the price of less than a coffee, I can create joy in my life and a memorable experience with my husband.

3. Be Present

Have you ever been at home but was thinking about work or vice versa? I have. Finding work life balance and harmony can be a daunting challenge. However, in order to create the life you want, you must stay in the present moment on whatever task you’re doing.

For example, I went to visit my favorite Aunt yesterday. I call her the Oracle. I set my intentions days before making the visit. I knew exactly what kind of experience I wanted to have. Upon arrival, I intentionally left my cell phone in the car so there would be no distractions during our visit. I wanted my focus and attention to be completely with and on the Oracle. We had a wonderful time together. And wouldn’t you know, her house phone didn’t ring until I was on my way out of the door. I had a wonderful experience, and I was able to stay in the present moment.

Tips on Staying Present:

  1. Make a decision
  2. Set your intentions
  3. Establish boundaries & guidelines before the event
  4. Remove all distractions

To create the life you want, you may need to make some changes. Trust yourself and strive to have the best life ever. If you decide to take charge of your life now, just imagine what your life will be like in the next couple of years. Love yourself enough to live the life you really want.
